Atlas Signs, Inc. was formed in 1998 by Sean B. Stanton. Mr. Stanton, a Clemson graduate, started Atlas Signs on a whim, noting the successes of local franchises and a close friend from the Upstate of South Carolina. Initial resources included a Nissan Pulsar, a small apartment, and a small business loan of $5000. The $5000 was spent on the day he received the loan, as he purchased a computer and raw materials. With little or no experience in the industry, Mr. Stanton relied on instinct, luck, his faith, and bonds with new friends and family. Upon completion of his first job as an entrepreneur, he lost $85, as his first customer provided him with insufficient funds.
Despite the poor beginnings of his company, Mr. Stanton remained focused. In the summer of 1998 he warily entered a construction trailer for Centex Homes in the Village Green Subdivision in West Ashley, SC. He was very nervous when he presented his business card to a field manager named Jamie Merrit. Mr. Stanton left the jobsite with the certain feeling that the field managers in the trailer were laughing at him, as he had a ladder and 2-12’ posts hanging out the back of his Nissan Pulsar. One and a half years later, Mr. Stanton got the call that gave him the opportunity of a lifetime. Amy Allen, the Purchasing Manager from Centex Homes, gave him a call a week before Christmas. She asked if I remembered Jamie and the initial meeting at the trailer. They knew, as did Mr. Stanton, that Centex Homes and the homebuilding market in the LowCountry of South Carolina, needed a sign vendor hungry enough and determined enough to grow with them.
Since then, Atlas Signs has developed a niche for working with both residential builders and commercial developers. Over the last 10 years Atlas Signs has experienced tremendous advancement. Even through the ups and downs of the housing “bubble”, Atlas Signs has always retained steady growth. Recently, we have moved into an impressive 16,000 square foot production facility. Unparalleled customer service coupled with a fantastic and caring staff, has given Atlas Signs an advantage against its competitors.
